Four Arrested, Two Charged in Kona Weapon Incident

A Friday morning incident involving a weapon and a burglary has led to the arrest of four individuals and charges against two of them.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that Kona Patrol officers responded to a condominium complex on the 75-5800 block of Walua Road at 5:21 a.m.

Upon arrival, a resident told police that he had been woken up by a loud banging noise from the condo’s garage. The resident said he went to investigate and found a man and a woman standing next to a parked car that belonged to someone who lived in the condominiums. The pair reportedly ran to the vehicle and jumped in.

At that point, the resident noticed two other people in the back seat of the SUV. He grabbed the keys to the vehicle to prevent them from driving off. Police say that the resident reported that the male driver pointed a handgun at him and demanded the keys. After throwing the keys into the SUV, the victim left the area and called police.

After the ordeal, HPD officers noticed the SUV in a parking lot on Ali’i Drive.

Two men and two women ran from the vehicle, according to witnesses in the area who were able to provide descriptions to police.

Thirty-three-year-old Darren Grace of Kona, 21-year-old Dylan Myers of Kona, 18-year-old Shivonne Kahee of Kona, and a 15-year-old girl were arrested and taken to the Kona police station.

HPD reports that the SUV was recovered after being determined stolen. During the recovery, police also located a bag believed to belong to one of the suspects. Detectives recovered a firearm and property believed to have been taken during other alleged crimes between Aug.18 and Aug. 21.

All four were taken to the Kona Police Station, where the adults were held in the cellblock as detectives continued to investigate. The 15-year-old girl was released to family members.

Detectives released Myers at 10:30 p.m. Saturday after conferring with prosecutors, pending further investigation.

Bail for Grace was set for $279,000 after being charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of burglary, eight counts of theft, four weapons offenses, robbery, three counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, two counts of criminal property damage, and one count each of trespassing and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information.

Kahee was charged 16 offenses, including unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of burglary, six counts of theft, three counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, two counts of criminal property damage. and one count each of trespassing and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information. Her bail was set at $20,250.

Both Grace and Kahee remained at the Kona cellblock pending their initial court appearance on Monday.
