BRIEF: Pedestrian Killed While Crossing Wailoa Bridge
A crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian has claimed the life of a 56-year-old Hilo resident.
According to police, Marcelino Jacquias Jr. was struck by a 2008 white Kia van on Friday as he was crossing the Wailoa Bridge. The vehicle was going west and was driven by a 47-year-old man, when it struck Jacquias, who was not in a crosswalk when the collision took place. Authorities were first alerted to the incident when they received a call at 6:58 p.m.
Jacquias was transported to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was pronounced dead the next day at 6:42 p.m. Authorities say that it had appeared that the pedestrian was drinking at the time of the incident. A negligent homicide case has been opened up by officers of the Traffic Enforcement Unit, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
There were two passengers in the white van, a 43-year-old woman and a 5-year-old girl. Both passengers, along with the driver, were not injured in the collision.
