Police have identified a man who died in an early Saturday morning crash.

The Hawai’i Police Department says 27-year-old Laupahoehoe man Daven Dolan died from injuries he sustained following a two-vehicle collision that took place near the nine mile marker on Highway 19.

Just after 4 a.m., HPD received a call regarding the accident. Police learned that Dolan was operating a 2006 Lexus sedan as he traveled north on Highway 19 when he crossed the center line and hit a 2008 GMC Master delivery truck that was traveling south on the roadway.

Dolan was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m.

Police have not released the identity of the 37-year-old man in the GMC truck, but report that he was transported to the Hilo Medical Center and later taken to The Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.

HPD believes that alcohol may have contributed to the crash, and a negligent homicide case has been initiated. An autopsy has also been ordered to determine the exact cause of Dolan’s death.
