Mixed Results in Island-Wide Gas Prices
Fuel prices in Hilo have remained similar compared to last week’s average cost of fuel in Hilo, however, a fluctuation in prices for regular and mid-grade fuel over the past day have been seen in Big Island Now’s analysis of current fuel prices on the Big Island through AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report and Gas Buddy data.
On Wednesday, the average cost of regular fuel in Hilo remained at the same price as one week ago, $3.27. Wednesday’s price was a three cent jump from the average of $3.24 for regular fuel reported in Hilo the day prior. Mid-grade fuel saw a two cent average decrease in price from the previous week, but a two cent spike over a 24 hour period, holding an average on Wednesday of $3.35. Hilo’s average for premium gas saw an overall jump from $4.14 to $4.17. The latter was also the average on Tuesday.
Big Island Now’s analysis of AAA’s report shows that fuel prices in Hilo continued to slowly drop over the past month for all grades. Averages for both regular and mid-grade fuel have dropped by three cents compared to a month ago, while premium fuel has seen a decrease of five cents in average.
The average prices of fuel in Hilo are significantly lower than what they were one year ago. According to AAA’s report numbers, the average gas prices for regular fuel were $4.10, while mid-grade was an average of $4.18 and premium fuel cost $4.30.
According to Big Island Now’s average calculations of Gas Buddy data for Kailua-Kona, regular fuel averaged about $3.50, a slightly higher number than last week’s average of $3.44. Mid-grade fuel was an average of $3.62 Wednesday, two cents lower than last week’s average. Premium fuel averaged $3.70, a rise in price by four cents compared to last week.
In Honolulu, the average price of regular fuel is 20 cents less than in Hilo and 43 cents lower than Kona’s average regular fuel prices. Residents on Oahu are paying an average of $3.07 for regular fuel, a decrease of seven cents from last week.
Diesel prices in Hilo are an average of $4.17 this week, an increase of six cents from last week, while Honolulu diesel buyers are paying an average of $4.50, a penny less than last week’s average.
