HVNP Plans Closures As Hilda Nears
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park officials are preparing for the potential impacts of Hurricane Hilda, expected to continue approaching the Big Island later in the week.
As forecasts predict the potential of heavy rain and wind, backcountry areas at HVNP will be closed, beginning Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. Backcountry permits will not be issued until after potential impacts and reassessment of the area by park staff.
Along with the backcountry closure, Mauna Loa Road Kīpukapuaulu to the Mauna Loa Lookout and Nāmakanipaio Campgrounds and A-frame cabins are also scheduled to close, beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Jaggar Museum, Kilauea Visitor Center, restrooms, lava tube, front-country trails, and steam vents will all remain open, according to spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane.
