HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Twenty-nine motorists were arrested between Aug. 3 and Aug. 9 on Big Island roadways for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 29 arrested, 12 were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 628 DUI arrests have taken place so far in 2015, a 13.3 percent decrease from 2014, where 724 DUI arrests were made during the same time period.
Major accidents slightly decreased since 2014. So far, there have been 916 major accidents, compared to 962 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.8 percent.
Fourteen traffic fatalities have occurred thus far in 2015, a spike of 75 percent since last year when eight had occurred. HPD says that of the 14 fatalities, five were due to drugs and three were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.
HPD will maintain roadblocks and patrols throughout the island.
