HI-EMA, Partners Plan for Hilda

The Hawai’i Emergency Management Agency, along with local emergency management and civil defense agencies, including Hawai’i County Civil Defense, are working alongside state and federal partners to coordinate preparation efforts with the National Weather Service as Hurricane Hilda continues on its northwest path towards the Hawaiian Islands.

As of the 5 a.m. update, the center of Hurricane Hilda, currently a Category 1, was located 425 miles to the southeast of Hilo.

The storm began to weaken over the weekend as it took a northwest turn and encountered an upper level jet, leading to slowing and weakening.

HI-EMA reports that after collaboration between partners, there is believed to be a 10-15 percent change of tropical storm force winds making landfall on the Big Island.

Advisory level surf for east facing shores are forecast to begin Monday. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are potential impacts as Hurricane Hilda gets closer to the Big Island. Forecasts predict that potential impacts may be felt late Wednesday.
