Twenty-three motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between July 27 and Aug. 2 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 23 drivers arrested, 10 were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 599 DUI arrests have taken place so far in 2015, a 16 percent decrease from 2014, where 713 DUI arrests were made during the same time period.
Major accidents have also decreased in comparison to last year by 5.9 percent. So far this year, 877 major accidents have taken place on the Big Island, compared to 932 during the same time in 2014.
Traffic fatalities have hiked up in 2015. Thirteen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways, which is 62.5 percent higher than one year ago. At this time in 2014, eight traffic fatalities had occurred. According to HPD, of the 13 traffic fatalities, five were due to drugs and three were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.
