HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-seven motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between July 20 and July 26 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 27 arrested, 11 were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21. The numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI Statistical report.

In 2015, there have been 576 DUI arrests. This is compared to 680 during the same time period in 2014. Arrest numbers this year have decreased by 15.3 percent.

A total of 858 major accidents have taken place on the Big Island. The number is down by 4.8 percent from last year’s 901 major accidents during the same time period.

Traffic fatalities have increased by 62.5 percent. A total of 13 deaths have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year, while eight took place during the same time period last year. The number has changed from 14 as previously reported due to the reclassification of a July 18 fatality.

Of the 13 fatalities to occur this year, HPD report that five were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

Roadblocks and patrols will be continued throughout the island.
