Fuel Prices Trickle Down in Hilo, Kona

Fuel on the Big Island has continued to fluctuate as gas prices in Hilo have once again dropped.

On Monday, the average cost of regular fuel in Hilo dropped by six cents since last week to $3.27. Monday’s price was the same as what was reported in Hilo a day earlier. Mid-grade gas also dropped in price after seeing no fluctuation the previous week. Hilo’s average for mid-grade fuel was $3.37, two cents less than last week’s average. Premium gas also saw a drop by six cents, following a similar trend to regular fuel prices. All three grades of gas have held their average prices for the past 24 hours.

Analysis of AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report completed by Big Island Now has shown that Hilo’s regular fuel has dropped by six cents when compared to one month ago, while mid-grade had dropped by five cents in the past month and premium fuel has dropped by just one cent.

Fuel prices averages remain lower than they were one year ago. AAA reports that during the same time period in 2014, average gas prices for regular fuel were $4.13, while mid-grade was an average of $4.24 and premium fuel cost $4.34.

In Kona, fuel prices have seen a slight drop over the past week. According to Big Island Now’s average calculation of Gas Buddy data, regular fuel averaged about $3.44 Monday, down from $3.48 last week and $3.52 two weeks ago. Mid-grade fuel averaged $3.65, down by two cents from last week. Premium fuel averaged $3.66 Monday, showing no change from the week prior.

In Honolulu, the average gas price of regular fuel is six cents less than in Hilo and 23 cents less than prices in Kona. Residents on Oahu are paying an average of $3.21 for regular fuel, a decrease of three cents from last week.

Diesel prices in Hilo are an average of $4.11 this week, a decrease of six cents from last week, while Honolulu diesel buyers are paying an average of $4.51, a penny more than last week’s average.
