HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Sixteen motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between July 13 and July 19 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 16 drivers arrested, five were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the legal drinking age. The numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

So far in 2015, there have been 549 DUI arrests. This is compared to 663 arrests during the same time period in 2014. Arrest numbers for DUI have decreased by 17.2 percent this year.

Major accidents are down by six percent in 2015. A total of 819 accidents considered major have occurred so far, compared to 871 last year.

Traffic fatalities have increased by 75 percent. A total of 14 deaths have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year while eight took place during the same time period last year. Of the 14 fatalities, HPD reports that five were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

HPD will maintain roadblocks and patrols throughout the island.
