West Hawai’i Artists Invited to Submit Art

Submissions for a multi-media juried art exhibition are currently being accepted. The chosen art will provide the new Kealakehe West Hawai’i Community Health Center with a collection of art. The project is being conducted in partnership with the Donkey Mill Art Center.

West Hawai’i artists are invited to submit up to three art pieces from any media form they prefer, including wood, fiber, clay, metal, drawing, painting, prints, and photography.

Those submitting work are encouraged to follow the theme “Sense of Place,” interpreting and exploring the diversity of culture, the importance of the ocean, and the land of the Big Island. The theme is welcomed to be viewed in both literal and abstract views. All work submitted will be considered for purchase, with emphasis on those that build on the health center’s vision of health, humanity, and community well-being for the people of Hawai’i.

“West Hawai’i Community Health Center believes that art can inspire lifelong health and wellness as well as aid in the healing process. Art connects us to our community and we want it to cover our walls,” said Richard Taafe, Director of the West Hawai’i Community Health Center..

Professional and aesthetic standards must be met in order for the works to be considered by the jury. Work that is two-dimensional must be framed and ready to hand in, and three dimensional pieces are required to be free-standing and secured from tipping. Giclee works will not be accepted.

All submissions must be received by Friday, July 31, and those whose work has been chosen will be notified on Aug. 3.

A grand opening and dedication of the West Hawai’i Community Health Center will take place on Aug. 15 and the art exhibition will run through Oct. 15.
