HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Seventeen motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between June 8 and June 14 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 17 drivers arrested, seven were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the legal drinking age. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

In 2015, there has been a 17. 6 percent decrease in DUI arrests. So far, 464 individuals have been arrested, compared to 563 during the same time period in 2014.

Major accidents are down by a very short margin. A total of 673 have occurred this year, compared to 720 last year, a 6.5 percent decrease.

Traffic fatalities are 57.1 percent higher in 2015, compared to 2014. So far there have been 11 traffic fatalities, with seven occurring during the same time last year. Of the 11 deaths caused by traffic-related incidents, HPD says one was due to drugs and three were related to a combination of both drugs and alcohol.

Officers will maintain DUI roadblocks and continue patrols throughout the island.
