HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-five motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between May 25 and May 31 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 25 drivers, nine were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21.

DUI arrests are down by 18.2 percent in 2015, as compared to the same time in 2014. A total of 426 DUI arrests have been made so far this year, compared to 521 last year.

Major accidents have also decreased. So far in 2015, 613 accidents have occurred. At the same point in 2014, 676 accidents had taken place.

Ten traffic fatalities have taken place on Big Island roadways in 2015, an increase of 42.9 percent from seven during the same time period in 2014. Of the ten deaths, one was related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

HPD will maintain patrols throughout the island and roadblocks will continue.
