A Tuesday morning moped crash has left a 29-year-old Kailua-Kona woman in critical condition, according to the Hawai’i Police Department.

Police say the accident occurred between a moped and a dump truck, when the moped merged onto the southbound lane of Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway from Hualalai Road around 10 a.m. The moped reportedly made an attempt to merge between the dump truck and a trailer that it was pulling. The trailed then ran the moped over.

The operator of the moped, a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, suffered minor injuries, and the 29-year-old passenger of the moped suffered critical head injuries. Both were taken to the Kona Community Hospital. Authorities say neither were wearing a helmet.

No injuries were sustained by the operator of the dump truck.
