Seventeen motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 20 and April 26. Of the 17 arrested, seven were involved in vehicle accidents and two were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly statistical report.
DUI arrests are down 26.8 percent in 2015, compared to the same time period in 2014. So far, 306 arrests have occurred, compared to 418.
Vehicles accidents have also remained down slightly from last year. A total of 452 major accidents have happened this year, compared to 543 last year, a decrease of 16.8 percent.
Traffic fatalities have increased by 75 percent in 2015. Seven deaths occurred so far in 2015, compared to four last year. Of the seven fatalities one was related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

Officers will continue to conduct DUI roadblocks and patrols throughout the island.
