The Hawai‘i Island Police department is advising the public to be aware of a possible tow-truck scam.
On Friday, April 10, a 76-year-old Hilo man reported that he returned to his 2001 Toyota 4Runner at Lili‘uokalani Gardens in Hilo and found a paper on his windshield warning him that his vehicle registration had expired. The paper further said that he was not to move his vehicle and that a tow-truck had been called. The owner also found that his registration sticker was missing. Driving away, he noticed a tow truck nearby.
According to Police, when an officer requests a tow truck they will stay with the vehicle until the truck arrives.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity around parked vehicles are asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
