FHVNP April ‘Sunday Walk in the Park’
On Sunday, April 12, the Friends of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park will present its next “Sunday Walk in the Park” event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This month’s 4-mile hike will be led by volcanologist Cheryl Gansecki and will explore Kilauea Iki Ctater.
FHVNP explains the hike as beginning at the crater’s forested rim, where hikers will descend 400 feet while traveling through the rain forest. Park officials say native birds are known to frequent the canopy above the forest. Hikers will cross the steaming crater and continue past the throat of the vent that built Pu’u Pua’i cinder cone and ascend the far rim. Special attention will be paid to forest plants, birds, insects, the 1959 lava lake, and stream vents, in addition to cinder and spatter cones.
Interested participants should bring a lunch as the group will take a rest stop along the way.
Every month, FHVNP hosts a “Sunday Walk in the Park” event that is free for Friends members. Non-members are welcome to join the non-profit to attend. Annual memberships are $30 for individuals and $45 for families. The membership comes with many benefits. Entrance fees still apply.
