Twelve motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways for driving or boating under the influence of an intoxicant between March 16 and March 22. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one of them was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
The DUI arrest number remains down 31.3 percent in 2015 with 213 arrests, compared to 310 during the same time period in 2014.
Major accidents also continue to stay slightly lower than last year’s statistic at 19.2 percent. A total of 316 major accidents have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year, while last year, 391 had already occurred.
One statistic that is up 66.7 percent since last year is traffic fatalities. Last year at this time, only three traffic fatalities had occurred. This year, five lives have already been taken in traffic incidents. Two of the fatalities in 2015 were due to drugs.
