June 27 Lava Flow Update – 3/2/15
Following Hawai’i County Civil Defense’s Monday morning overflight assessment of the June 27 lava flow, light smoke conditions were reported as a light wind was blowing smoke in a southwest direction.
In addition to smoke conditions, Civil Defense reported that no changes continue to be seen in the downslope area of the flow. The limited activity, however, does not mean that lava is not running through the tube system.
According to the agency, a variety of breakouts, both along the north and south margins of the flow, as well as on the surface of the flow pad, continue. These breakouts provide proof that the tube system is being supplied and lava is traveling downslope.
None of the activity currently occurring is a threat to communities in the area. Civil Defense, along with Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, will monitor the flow and keep the public informed of any changes.
