June 27 Lava Flow Update – 2/22/15

The north margin breakout of the June 27 lava continues to advance, according to Hawai’i County Civil Defense following its Sunday morning overflight assessment.

Officials say that the breakout has advancement 20 yards since Saturday morning and remains about 1 mile west of Highway 130.

No changes has been reported in downslope flow areas, including the original flow front or the breakout that was headed toward Highway 130 in the vicinity of the Pahoa Police and Fire stations.

Civil Defense continues to report surface breakouts and breakouts along the north and south margins of the flow. These breakouts are an indication that the lava continues to be supplied to the tube system from the source.

According to officials, none of the lava activity is currently posing a threat to communities in the area. Civil Defense, along with Hawaiian Volcano personnel, will continue to monitor the flow activity and keep the public informed of any changes.

Light smoke conditions were reported Sunday morning as a light north wind was blowing smoke in a southeast direction. Individuals who are sensitive or have respiratory issues are advised to take necessary precautions.

A light rain in the area was occurring during Civil Defense’s overflight. There is currently no brush fire threat.
