Police Urge Caution at Roadside Memorials

The public is being urged by the Hawai’i Police Department to be aware of hazardous conditions at roadside memorials.

Police made the announcement following a deadly vehicle crash that killed three people on Saturday and left two injured. Although no formal identified of the individuals has been released, a memorial along Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kona has been set-up by mourners.

According to officials, individuals visiting roadside memorials should be aware of passing vehicles, and park their own vehicles out of the way.

Officials also say that holding nighttime vigils is particularly dangerous due to limited visibility and participants are encouraged to limit vigils to daytime hours.

Motorists driving in the vicinity of roadside memorials should use extra caution.

The HPD recognizes the importance of these memorials in the grieving process but encourage participants to exercise caution, in addition to common sense, in order to avoid additional tragedy.
