Multiple Road Closures Caused by Heavy Winds
Several roads around the island have been closed due to high winds.
Hawai’i County Civil Defense and the Hawai’i Police Department have announced the following road closures, as of 3:15 p.m.
– Kahakai Boulevard has been completely closed due to downed trees and power lines. The blockage is located above Keonepoko School in Hawaiian Beaches. Due to this closure, the Railroad Alternate Access Road has been opened for motorists needing to get through the area.
– Highway 19 in Waimea has been closed due to a downed tree. The closure, affecting all directions of traffic, is between the 55 and 56 mile markers.
– Highway 132, between Pahoa and Kapoho, is limited to one lane traffic only.
A wind advisory remains posted for the entire island until 10 p.m. Saturday. Additionally, a high wind warning remains posted for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa until 6 a.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service says that southwest to west winds are forecast to reach 30-35 miles per hour. Localized gusts are as high as 55 mph.
