Konawaena Hosts Girls Soccer State Regional
The Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Soccer Championshis are adopting the updated regional format agreed upon by athletic directors across the islands for the first time this year .
The Big Island will get the first crack at hosting the neighbor island regional during the Division I girls tournament, kicking off this weekend.
Konawaena High School’s Juilan R. Yates Field will host six teams this Friday and Saturday, with two winners moving on to next week’s Final Four on Oahu. Konawaena earned the ability to host the regional with its victory over Waiakea in last Saturday’s Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I Championship match.
During last summer’s Hawai’i Athletic Directors Association conference, AD’s swapped girls basketball for boys and girls soccer and changed the format of the tournament. In the past. league champions would host their own regional, with neighbor island champions hosting just one quarterfinal game against the winner of an Oahu school battle determined the day prior.
Now, champions from the BIIF and Maui Interscholastic League will share one regional while champions from the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu will compete in the other regional.
That means that Friday afternoon’s games, pitting ‘Iolani against Kahuku and Moanalua versus Kaiser, would be played at Yates Field. Under last year’s format, both of those games would have been played on Oahu with the winners traveling to face the neighbor island champion the next day.
MIL champion Baldwin, seeded third in the tournament, will take on the winner of the ‘Iolani/Kahuku match at 1 p.m. Saturday. At 3 p.m., the host Wildcats will take on the Moanalua/Kaiser victor.
According to Konawaena AD Bill Trumbo, ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
