HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Eleven motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1. Three of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21. These statistics come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI report.
A decrease of 29.5 percent has been seen in DUI arrests, compared to the last year. So far, 86 individuals have been arrested in 2015, compared to 122 in 2014.
Major accidents have also remained down. Eight-eight major accidents have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year, compared to 135 at the same time last year. The numbers show a decrease of 34.8 percent.
The fatality number remains down, with a decrease of 66.7 percent. One traffic fatality has occurred in 2015, compared with three during the same period last year. The fatality was not related to drugs or alcohol.
Police will continue to patrol roadways and DUI roadblocks will continue throughout the island.
