Volcano Transfer Station Improvements Continue

Improvements to the Volcano Recycling and Transfer Station that broke ground on Dec. 9, 2014 continue.

During the process of the $1.06 million project, the County of Hawai’i Department of Environmental Management Solid Waste Division wants to inform the public that rubbish disposal is in the processes of being moved closer to the entry of the transfer station and that roll off bins will be provided for rubbish disposal.

Caution and care is also asked of the public as construction work takes place while the transfer station continues to operate.

Additionally, the Solid Waste Division reminds the public of limited hours of operation. Operating hours are Monday, Thursday, and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Access to the area is strictly prohibited to the public on closed days.

In December, the County’s Department of Environmental Management said the transfer station was in need of a makeover because the current facility was built with older construction techniques, including the use of a wooden retaining wall that had deteriorated to the point where it was no longer structurally sound.

There are also hopes that the new facility will encourage recycling.

The project is expected to be completed by early Summer 2015.
