June 27 Lava Flow Update – 12/24/14

The June 27 lava flow remains stalled Wednesday morning.

Hawai’i County Civil Defense’s morning overflight shows that the flow has not advanced since 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

At the current time, the flow remains about 0.6 miles upslope from Highway 130 and the Pahoa Village Road intersection, about 700 yards from the back property line of the Pahoa Marketplace.

Activity along both margins of the flow remain active and surface breakouts in those areas are present, but at this time, none of the breakouts or activity appears to be advancing.

According to Civil Defense, none of the activity occurring poses an immediate threat to communities in the area.

Breakout activity and the monitoring of the recent flow front will continue and the community will remain informed.

Businesses in the area continue to take the necessary steps to prepare for a possible evacuation as the flow threatens possible advancement. Individuals driving in the area should use care and be prepared for an increase in traffic.

Civil Defense reported light smoke conditions Wednesday morning with light variable winds that are blowing the smoke in a south-southeast direction. As usual, these smoke conditions have the possibility of increasing and those who are sensitive or have a history of respiratory problems are advised to take precautions and to stay inside.

Railroad Avenue, which opened Saturday, Dec. 20, remains open as an alternate access road. The road opened to allow the public to become familiar with it and the traffic flow should the highway be impacted.

Highway 130 remains open with no plans to close it at this time, according to officials.
