Suspicious Man Near Hilo Union School During Lock Down Drill

The Hawai’i Police Department notified Hilo Union School Wednesday morning that it had received a report of a suspicious person nearby.

According to a HPD release, South Hilo Patrol officers responded at 9:35 a.m. to a report of a suspicious man who had been wandering on and around Waianuenue Avenue near Hilo Union School. At that time, police notified the school as a precaution and responded to the area.

A 28-year-old Pahoa man, described as disoriented, was located The man spoke with officers and then left the area without incident.

Hilo Union School was not placed on lock down, despite an initial HPD Nixle alert that incorrectly stated that the school, along with Hilo High and Intermediate schools, were under a lockdown. The school was, coincidentally, in the process of a lock down drill at the time.
