According to a Hawai’i Police Department weekly statistical breakdown, 17 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence on Big Island roads from Oct. 10 to Oct. 26.
Among the 17 arrested, four were involved in traffic accidents and two were under the age of 21.
A total of 944 DUI arrests have been made, in comparison to last year at the same time where 1,063 arrests had been made. This shows an overall decrease of 11.2 percent from the previous year.
So far this year. there have been 1,282 major accidents on Big Island roadways, compared to 2013, where 1,116 major accidents occurred during the same time period, an increase of 14.9 percent.
Ten traffic fatalities have occurred on the Big Island this year. During the same time period last year, 23 deaths had occurred, a decrease of 56.5 percent.
Six of the fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.
HPD will continue roadblocks and patrols throughout the Big Island.
