Evacuations Looming as Lava Threatens Pahoa Village Road

According to Hawai’i County Civil Defense, the June 27 lava flow is closely approaching Pahoa Village Road.

It was announced Sunday evening at 9:30 p.m. that the lava flow advancement rate and speed has picked up since earlier in the day.

With an advancement of about 170 yards since 9 a.m. Sunday, the flow is moving at a rate of approximately 15 to 20 yards an hour.

Currently, the lava front is approximately 600 yards from Pahoa Village Road.

Due to the lava flow location, direction, and advancement rate, residents in the immediate downslope area of the flow path have been advised to prepare for possible evacuation tonight.

Civil Defense personnel, along with members of community response teams, will be going door to door through the immediate area to inform residents of the current flow conditions and possible evacuation.

Residents in areas that are not in immediate danger will be kept informed of the lava flow status and any need for evacuation.

An American Red Cross shelter has opened at Sure Foundation Church in Kea’au for residents who need to evacuate their homes due to the lava flow.

Sure Foundation Church in Kea’au is located at 16-1592 Pohaku Circle.

As of 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Pahoa Village Road is closed from Apa’a St. to Post Office Road.

Smoke conditions also have the possibility of increasing as the lava flow approaches the community. Individuals down wind that may be sensitive or have respiratory problems are advised to take necessary precautions and remain indoors.

Civil Defense and Public Safety personnel will continue to operate around the clock, keeping close observation of flow activity.
