June 27 Lava Update – 10/24/14

According to Hawai’i County Civil Defense’s Friday morning assessment, the leading edge of the June 27 lava flow has advanced approximately 300 yards since yesterday. It continues to move in a northeastern direction.

The rapid pace of movement takes the leading edge of the flow about 250 yards from the Apa’a St. area, near the Pahoa Transfer Station.

Very little burning activity has been observed and smoke conditions continue to be moderate. At the current time, there is no threat of a brush fire.

Civil Defense released on Friday that, along with Public Safety personnel, they will be conducting door to door notification of residents in the down slope areas of Pahoa Village to ensure residents are aware of current activities.

Door to door notifications will begin Saturday, however, this is not an evacuation notice.

Civil Defense has not issued an evacuation notice.

According to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, localized topography is keeping the narrow lobe that has become the leading edge from spreading out. This results in the narrow, fast moving flow.

Kilauea continues to erupt at its summit and within the East Rift Zone, and gas emissions remain elevated.

Due to the change in flow activity and advancement, road closures in the area will remain in effect. Apa’a St. and Cemetery Road between the Pahoa Transfer Station and Kaohe Homesteads Road are currently closed.

Flow activity is being closely monitored around the clock by Civil Defense and Public Safety personnel in the area.

The current lava flow activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities, and currently, no evacuations are needed. Residents will be given adequate notice to safely evacuate, should it become necessary.
