DUI Arrests Fall Further Below Last Year’s Numbers
Arrests on motorists driving under the influence on Hawai`i Island roads continue to fall further below numbers at this point in 2013.
According to statistics released Tuesday by the Hawai`i Police Department, DUI arrests are down 11.7 percent as of Sept. 28. The 863 arrests this year, including 21 last week, are 114 less than at the same point last year.
On the other hand, major traffic accidents remain up by 11.4 percent over the same period last year. There have been 1,150 major accidents in 2014, more than the 1,032 reported last year at this time.
HPD says that 10 of the drivers arrested last week were also involved in traffic accidents.
Nine people have died this year, far less than the 22 fatalities reported up to Sept. 28, 2013. The HPD report says three of this year’s deaths had some relation to drug use, while three others had a combining factor of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue throughout the island.
