Police Arrest Kailua-Kona Pair in Stolen Boat Case

A pair of Kailua-Kona men were arrested Thursday after  being linked to three different incidents involving a home burglary and use of another person’s boat.

The suspects, 22-year-old Michael James McCrum and 19-year-old Isaac Carl Akina, were arrested and taken to the Kona police cellblock, where they remained ahead of Monday’s court appearance.

A 42-year-old Kailua-Kona male reported to authorities that his outboard motor had been stolen from his boat while it was docked at Kailua pier. When officers arrived, the victim found both suspects using the motor on an aluminum skiff.

During the investigation, it was learned that the boat was stolen in a separate incident. The investigation also concluded that the suspects were linked to a robbery at the victim’s Weli Weli Beach home on Aug. 3. The suspects allegedly broke into two dwellings, damaging property and stealing various items.

McCrum was charged Friday afternoon with three counts of theft, burglary, and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Bail was set at $47,000.

Akina was charged with two counts of theft, burglary, and criminal property damage. His bail was set at $9,500.
