Grammy Winner Mavis Staples to Grace Kahilu Theater Stage
Legendary Grammy winner Mavis Staples will be performing live on the Kahilu Theater stage, Sunday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 pm.
Staples, best known as an American R&B artist and Gospel singer, won her first Grammy award in 2011 for Best Americana Album for her hit song “You Are Not Alone.” She is also an actress and civil rights activist.
Staples’ family band, The Staples Singers, topped the charts 40 times between 1971 and 1975 with two number one singles, “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do it Again,” as well as a number two single, “Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas?”
In addition to the long recording list with her family band, Staples has recorded with a wide variety of musicians, most notably her longtime friend Bob Dylan, who she was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award with in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category. Other big names she has recorded with include Ray Charles, Nona Hendryn, and George Jones.
In 2013, Staples released her newest album One True Vine, which is self-described as “a dark night of the soul, a journey from a search for faith to glorious belief”.
Staples’ style has been ever changing for the past six decades and has been a strong foundation of American music. With strong ties to her family band, Staples has been able to transform herself throughout her career, and the world around her, one song at a time.
