The Hawai`i Police Department says it arrested 62-year-old Ka`u resident Rayner Kinney Jr. Wednesday on multiple charges, including suspicion of attempted murder, after a pair of incidents back in May in the Kona Gardens subdivision.
Kinney was arrested at an Ocean View residence by detectives of HPD’s Juvenile Aid Section.
Authorities say that Kinney allegedly assaulted an 85-year-old Ocean View man on two separate occasions in May. The victim reported the initial incident on May 23, a day after he was allegedly struck by Kinney’s fists during an argument.
On the same day the first incident was reported, the victim was struck again. The suspect allegedly used a wooden object, a metal object, and his fists and feet to attack the victim. Kinney allegedly stole the victim’s firearm and fired shots from it before driving off in the victim’s vehicle.

Kinney is charged with violating a protective order and promoting a detrimental drug. He was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, terroristic threatening, assault, robbery, reckless endangerment, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and two counts of abuse of a family/household member.
Kinney was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on the drug and protective order charges. Bail was set on those two charges at $1,250.
HPD says it continues to investigate the other allegations.
