Hilo High School graduate Charles Clay was one of seven players that received the word that no football hopeful wanted to hear.

Clay, who played college football at Southern Methodist University and the University of Hawai`i, was cut by the Green Bay Packers Sunday. The Packers, like every team around the National Football League, need to cut their roster down to 75 players by Tuesday, but Sunday’s cuts only brought the roster down to 81.

Clay played in each of the Packers’ three preseason games this season. The undrafted safety recorded a tackle in a Week 1 loss at Tennessee and another one in the Week 2 win at St. Louis.

Others cut by the Packers were cornerback Antonio Dennard, wide receivers Chris Harper and Gerrard Sheppard, linebacker Korey Jones, fullback Ina Liaina, and quarterback Chase Rettig.
