Kua O Ka La New Century Public Charter School will remain closed Tuesday as the school continues to recover from the impact made by Tropical Storm Iselle.

“We have no phone service, no landline or cell phone coverage, so for safety reasons its kinda not good to have kids around when we have no way of communicating,” said Puanani Wilhelm, the Pahoa charter school’s Education Director.

Phone problems have persisted throughout the weekend and was one of a few reasons why the decision to close school activities on Monday was made the day before. Officials also needed to assess damage that was caused by Iselle’s wrath.

“We had kinda significant damage on the makai side of our campus, which is right next to Ahalanui Park,” Wilhelm explained. “There was a bit of storm surge damage that moved around some of our storage and flooded a couple of our offices, so they are trying to figure out how to clean that up as well.”
