Iselle Continues To Move Toward Hawaii

Hurricane Iselle has changed little in strength and is expected to move toward the Hawaiian islands through Thursday, the National Hurricane Center reported at 6 a.m. HST.

Iselle is 1,055 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving west at 9 mph with sustained winds of 125 mph, the NHC reported.

The category 3 hurricane is expected to weaken over the next 48 hours as it picks up speed and turns west-northwest later today and Wednesday, the NHC said. Hurricane force winds currently extend up to 35 miles from the center of the storm, and tropical force winds extend up to 115 miles outward.

No coastal watches or warnings have been posted yet for the Hawaiian islands.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Julio continues to move westward “far from land,” about 1,145 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, the NHC said this morning.

Some strengthening is expected as Julio moves westward over the next 48 hours and by Wednesday the tropical storm is expected to be upgraded to a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center will continue to monitor Julio’s progress, while Iselle’s position now places it under the watch of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
