Minority Student Conference At UH-Hilo

The 8th annual student conference of the Islands Opportunity Alliance — Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program is being hosted by the University of Hawai`i at Hilo on Aug. 5 and 6.

The public is invited to the opening day’s sessions on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in classroom building Wentworth 1 on the UH-Hilo campus.

Nineteen IOA students from across the 18-member alliance will present their independent research results and experiences in information technology, marine science, physics and biology.

The public may also attend an opening reception and student poster session, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the university’s Campus Center 301.

The Stokes Alliance is a National Science Foundation program working to increase the number of minority students graduating with four-year degrees in disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and math.

Partners in the IOA include American Samoa Community College; College of Marshall Islands; College of Micronesia – FSM; Guam Community College; Northern Marianas Community College; Palau Community College; Chaminade University; Hawai`i Pacific University; University of Guam; and all 10 UH System campuses, with exception of UH West O`ahu.

UH-Hilo serves as the lead institution in the IOA.
