Concussions Topic Of North Hawaii Hospital Talk

Melinda Roalstad, former medical director for the US Ski and Snow Boarding Association, will discuss concussive head injuries in a talk titled, “Recovery from Concussive Injury – It Takes a Village,” 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at North Hawaii Community Hospital’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa meeting rooms.

Roalstad will talk about how “it takes a village” to support someone who’s experienced a concussion, from pre-injury education to post-injury management.

Roalstad also will share the physiology of what happens in the brain following a concussive injury, the risks involved with re-injury during healing, and the ideal recovery process in terms of day-to-day adjustments that need to occur for successful outcomes.

The discussion is free and open to the public, and coaches, parents, athletic enthusiasts, physical therapists, chiropractors and other providers and physicians are encouraged to attend.

Roalstad has created protocols for treating elite athletes following head injuries that have been adopted by the International Ski Federation, and co-founded Think Head First, LLC, devoted to raising consciousness about and helping to coordinate recovery from concussive injury.
