Police Ramping Up DUI Checkpoints, Patrols
Police said today they will be ramping up DUI checkpoints and roving patrols for the three-day Fourth of July weekend.
The increased enforcement, which will begin today and continue through Sunday, is part of a national and statewide campaign entitled “Drunk Driving: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
So far this year, police have made more than 600 arrests for driving under the influence.
Of those, 211 were in South Hilo and 216 occurred in Kona.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol presents a potential danger to every motorist, passenger and pedestrian the driver encounters,” the police department said.
