UPDATE: Charges Filed in Puna Marijuana Bust

Police have charged a Puna couple with a total of 10 offenses in connection with an alleged marijuana-growing operation at their home in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

David Lopez, 52, was charged Friday night with first-degree promotion of marijuana, two counts of second-degree promotion of marijuana and three counts of paraphernalia.

His 62-year-old wife, Cyra Kalama-Lopez, was charged with one count each of first-degree promotion of marijuana and second-degree promotion of marijuana and three counts of paraphernalia.

Both were released after posting bail, $26,000 in the case of David Lopez and $19,000 for Cyra Kalama-Lopez.

First-degree promotion of marijuana is a class “A” felony which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

Second-degree promotion of marijuana is a class “B” felony, which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $25,000.

A couple was in police custody Friday after a raid on their Puna home resulted in the seizure of more than 800 marijuana plants.

Shortly before noon, vice officers executed a search warrant at a house in the 15-900 block of 31st Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Police said they recovered 674 plants ranging from six inches to four feet in height, 80 cloned marijuana starts and 6.94 pounds of dried marijuana.

Police arrested 62-year-old Cyra Kalama-Lopez at the scene. She was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continued the investigation.

Her husband, 52-year-old David Lopez, turned himself in at the Hilo police station several hours later and was arrested.

Both remained in custody pending further investigation into possible charges of commercial promotion of marijuana.
