Calling All Big Island Foodies: We Need Your Help
“For this assignment, I recommend 30 minutes a day of intense physical training.”
That was one final piece of advice given by our editor-in-chief, David Kvasnicka, after giving this writer primary responsibility for Big Island Now’s all-new Food section.
He wasn’t joking.
What’s in a Review
The centerpiece of our new section (and the biggest threat to our physical health) will be, for the time being, our weekly restaurant reviews. They’ll be complemented regularly by foodie news and discussion items, focused entirely on eating on the Big Island.
All reviews are being conducted anonymously, with no subsidy or “freebies” from any of the restaurants we visit. Where possible, we’ll be making multiple trips to establishments to provide cooks and servers a fair shot, and to check for consistency.
We’ll dutifully attempt to try as many menu items as possible. Our first review, “Pineapples,” had us gobbling down 10 different entrees and appetizers over multiple trips.
So much for those skinny jeans.
Foodie News
Are you a restaurant owner, cook, server, or just good ol’ fashioned serial diner? Well, we want you to tell us “what’s up” at your establishments (or haunts).
We’ll be regularly publishing food-related news about things happening right here on the Big Island, and we could use your input. Have a special culinary event coming up? A new restaurant opening? Drop us a line.
If any readers have a Big Island-related food question (for example, where are the best omelets in town?), we’d also be happy to hear from you via email and in our comments section.
Perhaps most important though, is our frequent need of “recommends” by the serious foodies among you. Where are your favorite places to eat? What do you order? Are there establishments you avoid like the plague?
Your input will help to shape this section (and our waistlines) in the weeks and months to come.
Feel free to post your thoughts and suggestions in our “comments” section, or email tips, news and inquiries to our team: newsdesk@BigIslandNow.com.
Fitness advice is also welcome.
