Rescuers Find Lost Hiker Using Phone GPS Signals
Fire department rescuers used cell phone towers to triangulate the location of a hiker lost in a forest reserve above Laupahoehoe on Thursday.
The 20-year-old male hiker was reported lost in the Piha Forest Reserve at about 11:25 a.m.
Using GPS signals from the hiker’s cell phone, rescuers were able to determine his location and spotted him from the department’s Chopper 1.
A ground crew went to his location and led him about a mile out of the forest.
A department spokesman said the hiker did not require any medical attention.
