Two elderly residents of Hawaiian Acres were injured in a fire that destroyed their Puna home Sunday morning.

Firefighters from the Keaau Fire Station responding to a 5:09 alarm found the 900-square-foot structure engulfed in flames.

The occupants were able to escape the building but required transport to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

The home at 16-1451 Opeapea Street, also known as Road 7, was valued at $105,000.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The Red Cross said it would meet with the home’s residents to ensure that their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing would be met.
