The public is invited to celebrate Arbor Day with free guided tours of the Botanical Garden at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

Three separate tours will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the UH Hilo campus. No registration is required.

Visitors can explore unique aspects of tropical gardening, learn from the experts and discover why the garden is an important part of the local community.

The tours:

9 a.m. tour: “Ancient Survivors: The Secret World of Cycads” explores a world-class collection of prehistoric plants, focusing on the biology and global conservation of the ancient Zamia genus.

10 a.m. tour: “Living Galleries: The Art and Engineering of Bromeliads” highlights the unique water-trapping biology of epiphytes, rainforest plants that include bromeliads, orchids, mosses, and ferns.

11 a.m. tour: “Princes of the Tropics: A Journey Through the Palms” showcases the architectural grandeur of the palm family and the evolutionary story of the native Hawaiian Loulu.

The Botanical Garden at UH Hilo, founded in 1990, houses more than 130 species of cycads, hybrid bromeliads, and gigantic palms. It is open daily with no admission fee.
