Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi launches unique workforce development program for female high school students
Unique program connects girl scouts with industries, employers and career pathways
Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi announced the launch of “Girls In….,” a unique workforce development program for high school female students throughout the state.
The program connects girls with industries, employers and career pathways through a hands-on industry immersion experience.
The goal is to strengthen Hawaiʻi’s future workforce while providing girls with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about post-secondary plans related to colleges, majors, certifications, job training and applying for jobs after high school graduation.
“Girl Scouts has always been about preparing girls for their futures,” said Dr. Kanoe Nāone, CEO of Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi, said in a news release. “This program is unique because it’s not a one-time career day. It’s sustained exposure to an industry, and the people who work in it, along with specific companies.”
It’s the first of its kind program in the country, according to Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi.
“Our goal is for girls to walk away understanding there is a place for them to work in Hawai‘i, even if they decide to go to the continent for college, and give them the exposure to a variety of industries and companies,” Nāone said,
Participants will spend 8 to 10 weeks learning about a specific industry, including dentistry, healthcare, banking, finance, real estate and construction. The program consists of site visits with employees and leadership, skill-building sessions and opportunities to connect with internships and jobs.
Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i has established preliminary partnerships with three companies and is seeking other interested employers. Companies interested in learning more about “Girls In..…” should email Nāone at knaone@gshawaii.org.
Participants must be registered girl scouts. To become a member, join a troop, or learn about the program, visit GSHawaii.org or call 808-595-8400.
Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i supports nearly 4,000 girl and adult members statewide. It is headquartered on O‘ahu with three service centers on the Big Island, Kaua‘i and Maui.
