A joint training exercise between hospital personnel and first responders will be conducted at Hilo Benioff Medical Center on Friday, Oct. 16.

During the exercise, members of the public may see an increased presence of police and fire personnel, along with specialized emergency response vehicles and equipment within designated areas extending from Wailuku River State Park’s Rainbow Falls to Hilo Benioff Medical Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hawai‘i Island police will use the Special Response Team BearCat armored vehicle, Crisis Negotiation Team response vehicle, and marked blue-and-white police vehicles. Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel will also participate with marked emergency response SUVs and an ambulance.

The training will not interfere with normal hospital operations or patient services.

The public is advised that this is a planned training exercise and there is no cause for alarm. These exercises provide valuable opportunities for emergency responders to strengthen interagency coordination, communication, and readiness for critical incidents.

For inquiries regarding the training exercise, contact Lt. Kevin Brodie, Special Response Team Commander, at Kevin.Brodie@hawaiipolice.gov.
