Hawai‘i Police Department Kona Patrol officers responded at 1 p.m. Tuesday to the beach at the bottom of Kaʻohe Road after receiving a report from U.S. Coast Guard about a missing diver.

Officers were able to contact an acquaintance of Young at the beach, who told them they were diving when he lost sight of the 18-year-old.

Hawai‘i Fire Department search and rescue personnel located Young shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday in the water. He was subsequently transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m.

Police initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation, and an autopsy was ordered to determine Young’s exact cause of death.

No foul play is suspected.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Bradley Llanes with Hawai‘i Police Department Area II Criminal Investigation Section at 808-326-4646, extension 3268, or via email at bradley.llanes@hawaiipolice.gov.
