An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point on Oʻahu shortly after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday hoisted a 55-year-old man from the vessel and safely transferred him to Hilo International Airport so he could be taken to get higher medical care.

Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received a notification at shortly before 8 a.m. Oct. 6 from a crew member of the 545-foof U.S. flagged cargo ship Ocean Gladiator requesting a medevac for a crewmember experiencing a medical condition aboard the vessel, which at that time was 540 miles southeast of the Big Island.

Watchstanders established regular communications with the vessel’s crew to monitor the patient’s status after conferring with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended the medevac.

They then planned the medevac for when the vessel was at 86 miles offshore from the island.
